I can't say for sure of my guess is that you're talking about the smell of gasoline and not exhaust. If that is the case perhaps the fuel line is the issue. The rubber fuel line, is degrading over time causing slow leak in the rubber portion of the fuel line between the fuel pump and the metal fuel line attached to the frame of the car. I had a problem with my1979 vette. I replaced the rubber portions of the fuel line ..... the gas smell went away

If you can, after parking the Corvette, use a tissue and start wiping the fuel lines. If there is fuel leaking, the tissue will absorb it. That should help locate the area of the leak. You may need to go all the way back to the gas tank. Check really good around the fuel filters. That, along with the exchange between the metal fuel lines to rubber are the areas most often leaking due to lose connections or the gaskets/rubber needing to be replaced. Be careful of hot areas in the engine bay. Also if you have a strong light, use it to aid in giving an eyeball exam. Follow you nose also.
