I just bought a 79 vette w/ side pipes, the car is beautiful and the pipes are great looking. However, the car roars!! can I add mufflers to quiet the car?

You would probably have to start at the headers and work back with a new exhaust instead of the side pipes. Typically side pipes are done to get the roar, and not much room is left for mufflers. A factory exhaust should be available aftermarket through an auto-parts store, which would allow you to remove the side pipes and go with a muffled exhaust.
