how to glue rear view mirror 2003 crv

there is a black patch on the windshield where the metal tab goes. I got a generic glue kit
fron auto zone and followed directions. it fell off the next day. is there a special glue for
this year?

Do we remove the black patch? What if it is pitted from the button falling off?
