I have a 1988 camaro iroc-z and it over heats when I drive it around town but does fine on the highway without any problems. Does anyone know why that might be

Check your electric fan if so equipped. It should be coming on at around 200 degrees or so. If it's not coming on it probably needs replaced. If yours has a belt driven clutch fan then give fan a spin with your hand. Does it spin more than about a quarter turn before it stops? If so the clutch fan is bad.

It has two fans and they both work and but and like I said it runs great on the high way but in the city it gets real hot

Ok these cars tend to run hotter than other cars in town driving. How hot is it getting? Mine averages 180-220 in city driving. If not hotter than that I would not worry so much about it. But if hotter than that I would flush radiator, check for trash caught in the fins of radiator and check thermostat and water pump operation. When your fans come on does temp drop and fans turn off for a few minutes before coming back on? If so that's normal operation. Also are the fan shrouds in place?

It runs about 260 in the city

Oh crap way to hot. I would remove the radiator and flush it with water hose. Then back flush it with water hose. Pull thermostat out and test it. Check radiator cap. Look closely at water pump. Is there any sign of coolant (dry or wet) around the weep hole? If so replace pump. Have you ever used stop leak of any kind in it? If so might end up needing a new radiator. But before you go that far check everything else and see if it runs cooler. If it does not then borrow an infra red temp gun and check the temp in different areas of the radiator. If when checking the radiator temps with gun you have areas of the radiator that are at lower temps than the rest of it you will need to replace the radiator cause it's all stopped up.
