Lien Release - Who's Responsible?

Question type: Car Selling & Trading In

Purchased 2008 VW GTI summer 2013 from a dealership in Louisville, Ky and financed through Old National Bank out of Evansville, IN (I believe) at the time of purchase.  Within the next 2-3 months, I refinanced the car loan through my local bank because I got a better rate and more convenient to have loan through them.  New title was eventually received after I refinanced through my local bank.  Fast forward to June of this year, I traded in my 2008 VW GTI for a 2016 Jeep Patriot from a dealership in Lexington, Ky.  I gave them the title during process of trading in my VW and signing the papers for my new Jeep.  Within a week or so after that, the Lexington, KY dealership has been calling me saying they need a lien release from Old National Bank.  This is strange to me because I only had the loan with Old National for a couple months in 2013 and then refinanced through my local bank, where it remained with from 2013-2018 and the title had my bank on there I believe, not Old National Bank.  I tried reaching out to Old National Bank about this a couple months back, but it didn't lead me anywhere but the dealership in Lexington keeps calling me asking about the status of getting it.  Honestly, I haven't actively been trying that hard to hunt it down or resolve the lien because of some poor customer service I had received from this dealership shortly after I got the Jeep, so I don't have much desire to try and hunt down anything for them due to their lack of trying to do something simple for me.  But, the dealership appears to be stuck with my VW until they get the lien release.  But this doesn't not seem like my problem anymore...  is there any sort of legal trouble I could get into for them not getting a lien release for this vehicle?

No legal trouble for you. The lien release is on the lender to provide to you for when you trade the vehicle in. The dealer should be contacting the bank themselves to resolve.
