Used car inspection

Asked by GuruVD3JJ Aug 03, 2018 at 10:59 PM

Question type: General

Buying a used car for a needy single mom. Have the Popular Mechanics
checklist, which seems comprehensive, and too difficult in Chassis/ Engine/
Powertrain for those unskilled in mechanics.  If I have a free inspection done at
the shop, will they likely cover all the points on the checklist, or less or more?
Is there a standard for pre-purchase inspection? Thank you.

Without mechanical knowledge I would not bother doing the inspection yourself. Ask mechanics what they inspect and show them the list. Paying for a comprehensive inspection is probably money well spent. If nothing else it gives you bargaining leverage.
