What is the 4WD button for if it automatically switches
into 4WD?

the 2005 and newer Escape models have the so called "intelligent system" made by JTEK. It is computer controlled with no driver input or button. It is a front wheel drive system that engages the rear wheels (frequently) as determined by the computer. Torque is sent rearward but not laterally. System returns to FWD system under cruise conditions.
