Car in park, ignition off, disconnect pos cable and set aside, then neg cable. When installing the new battery, put the neg cable first then pos. Use diaelectric grease and those red/green felt pads, they'll cut down on corrosion potential. Check the condition of the terminals on battery cables too, if they're loose/frayed replace them. Double or triple check you do not cross connect red/black cables on battery, just do a quick search on this site why you don't want to do this.
