How can you tell if the alternator quits working

You can check at the battery with a digital multi-meter set on DCV. With the vehicle running check at the battery, it should show anywhere from 13.8 to 14.7 DCV.

Otherwise the DCV will just show battery voltage. A fully charged battery is 12.7 DCV.
