how can you tell them maf is getting power and how can you tell if its bad or not

My 84 Buick T-Type start but will not stay running. I removed the MAS and the car stays running but after 45 second or so it dies. Is this because the MAS is not connected? What would be a good source to buy a new/reconditioned MAS for 84 T-Type?
