Question type: General

I can bypass my interlock system and start my car by jumping the solenoid with a wrench touching the two bolts together, the mouthpiece does not have to be plugged in for this to work. will the interlock system know i am bypassing it? Could I get in trouble?

Depends on alarm. I suspect that you have a State Installed device usually installed for DWI offenders ,,the newer interlocks include a GPS in order to validate your location.~~ I pray that i'm wrong about the interlock's purpose if not then you need to step back and see what you are willing to trade to continue this Your probably a really good guy who needs help..sometimes all you need to do is ask God bless you my friend

Reported as criminal activity...... You should NOT be monkeying around with a breathalyzer interlock.

Your question may have initiated a turning point in your life. If you believe in God (as I do) you will sometimes see The Lord prevent you from hurting yourself and others. To butt Heads with Him and do what you want will only result in grief. Look at this as the beginning of a new life ... if not then ya gotta do ,, what ya gotta do

what everybody fails to understand is this is a coalition with your state-run DWI program and any provider of the Interlock system the almighty dollar is at Play they don't give a rat's ass if you break down or your interlock decides to shut down in some God awful part of the city they don't care what did you care about is making sure you get to your friendly car toys to have it repaired that is of course when you show up with your car that's being towed on your dollar and their technician is gone for the day

Many people just don't get it regarding today's computerized security systems and still believe a jumper or anything that conducts current will override security. Nada ,, when I was a kid you could jump a car using the foil from your cigarette pack,, but defeating today's systems can only be done by someone very skilled with the knowledge of how the system works .. you are more likely to produce a unit with "crispy critters" instead of defeating those units. The best way to get your car started is not to be loaded when you get in it

It will register that the car was energized and you weren't blowing, regardless if the head piece is on. In some states this will trigger the horn to blow and lights to flash. It will also trigger an early recall for the info to be downloaded and rat you out.

IMO the only way the car won't start is if you've been drinking. If you defeat the system and get into an accident you will probably g to jail in addition to fixing your car using your own money because almost all insurance companies won't pay a dime if you are commiting a felony .. and what you want to do is a felony . Please step back and read what you wrote. Perhaps you will realize that alcohol has probably already cost you more than a car. We all deserve to have happiness but I doubt you have not had a life in ages ,, indeed your looking to go to prison just to keep drinking... please ask for help before you destroy someone else's happiness

No. They occasionally do malfunction & lock you out even if they don't detect alcohol. Just like anything else that's government mandated, there's not much incentive to make it perfect.

I would suspect that if it malfunctioned the dude would make them fix it before spending his/her money to bypass it. Imagine you, or anyone you love being run down by a drunken driver that's only able to drive his car because you helped him start it

These heartless answers make me feel sad not only for this country but for humanity. There is nothing more noble and uplifting than defeating government overreach into our freedom and privacy, especially tax evasion, cryptocurrency, advances in encryption and anonymous speech ("dark web"), and using intelligence and technology to defeat this man's interlock device. Driving is the most dangerous activity in our daily lives, by far the #1 killer in non-health related death, and I am excited for upcoming technologies that will take us out of the driver's seat and have zero traffic fatalities. But for now, we face the risks in a free society so we can be mobile, just like we accept the risks of an armed society due to the second amendment. Everyone in this thread is guilty of distracted driving, sleepy/tired driving, and angry driving, which are all just as or more dangerous than drunk driving. Drunk driving laws are a textbook result of slippery slope, with BAC levels dropping from .18 to .15, .12 down to .10, and now .08 and .02 for certain people and states. It is incorrect for society to exact such harsh judgment on someone who drinks when they drive; drinking is just one of many things that are balled up reasons making humans imperfect fallible dangerous operators of motor vehicles moving at 60 mph. If you don't like these odds then stay off the road. I encourage the OP to research the internet for PDFs on the design of the interlock from the specific company that manufactured it and identify all the points that it connects with your car. If it's only at that one connection you speak of, then you should be good to go. Sorry that I do not have more information, and sorry that so many of your peers side with the government's authoritarian, illegal-everything overreach into your life. I'm sure if they got the interlock after being pulled over after having one drink, they would change their tune. But that's how people are -- they only think about themselves and can't place themselves in another's position. Oh, and increasingly they love arbitrary authority, but i blame public schooling for that one.

All of you may be misreading his original post. Obviously do NOT drink and drive, however my fiancé has been using hers for 11 months successfully. Ironically when it's the last month the device is incorrectly stating to blow in to the device, no matter HOW MANY TIMES she tries (it's been 2 weeks now). The car won't start, she's missing work and critical events about this. If the government and the companies that actually enforce this machine to DO IT'S F*CKING JOB and keep us all safe, they need to be more hands on, period.

Intoxalox should be ruled as Unconstitutional Excessive Punishment instead of Legal Safety Measure. It's simply another item on the List of bigger, better ways to exploit unwealthy Americans.

Depending on money the best advice I can give is to buy a beater car and have your federal monitored one on that and go blow in it here and there go for a drive let it idle for an hour or so blowing upon request . Then use your actual car and install one that you can control and manipulate turn off and on that isn't monitored . Not to drink and drive but i see the perspective of embarrassment and first dates , job interviews , meeting with clients or family etc . They don't detect drugs or anything so I agree it's a bit of a farce , you can be high or coked out of your mind long as theirs no alcohol you're okay and there's no other solution for people on medication or pot smokers they don't need a breathalyzer .

I had the same question, but am willing to give an explanation as to the reason. My husband got a marijuana DUI 6 years ago. He had a stroke while driving and crashed the car in a dirt bank on the side of the road. while being extracted from the car the police officer questioned him and he admitted to smoking pot 4 days prior and was charged and sentenced. Due to loss of work, loss of the vehicle, etc we have not had a car until recently to be able to have an interlock device installed for the year of use required for him to be able to get his license back. The device is a pain and is installed in my car (since he can't have a license until he's had the interlock for a year so therefore can't drive). I can deal with the fact that I'm the one punished for my husbands DUI, although I do not believe that you are under the influence 4 days after smoking pot I understand that it is still in your system. My issue is that now my car will not start. I am not showing a lockout on the interlock system, but it seems to be interfering with the ignition system and has some serious battery drain issues. Since the time it was installed the positive terminal of my battery has been having issues with corrosion (indicating a dead short I believe). I can't afford to have my car towed over 60 miles and pay whatever massive fee they are guaranteed to charge in order to have one of the interlock techs (not a mechanic) check it out. I live in a VERY rural area, at the top of a mountain, and realistically NEED a running vehicle to get food for my family. Please don't tell me I need help or that I need to find god. I committed no crime, did othing wrong, do not drink or smoke pot. I simply need to be able to bypass the interlock to verify the problem without being charged an ungodly fee to have it towed in and checked by them. As is they charged us $150 because of a bite of pastry (apparently it gives a false positive and trigger a lock out so that you can not start your car and then another $150 because I got a really bad cold and could not blow long enough or hard enough one day. Please help

You can start the engine that way but beware the interlock detects and records the rise in system voltage because of the alternator/generator spinning up and charging the battery and therefore assumes an engine start without a valid test, you have to first disconnect the alternator and later recharge your battery with a battery charger on trickle charge setting when you have finished driving.

You also have to separate the ignition "on" to the ignition system as well as the charging system from the interlock as it will detect both and require a valid test. I suggest you get it installed in an old technology car and just duplicate the ignition/charging/battery system so that it doesn't even know you started or even driven the car.

I am so with the people defending this man's question in the right senses and couldn't agree more! I deliver mail and do you think the government or intoxalock cares that 99% of people don't work in their car? Nope. So in equivalency if everything was fair, everyone with a DUI would have to blow into a device at their jobs all day everyday every 5 or 10 minutes. It goes way too far beyond alcohol relations. I haven't even thought about a drink in months, I only have to deal with paying extra for lockouts because I can't remember how many times the whole 45 seconds it takes me to leave my car to deliver a package, my luck that's when it will decide to go off. The people with it who complain and only have a drive from point A to point B really don't how good they have it. But as a person on here commented, nobody cares and just writes it off as well it's your own fault. True one's own fault for making the mistake of driving under the influence, but to be screwed by the system so much and not even related to alcohol is so wrong. I've never failed a test because of alcohol, it's only been missed retests, and also a good 4 or 5 lockouts this winter because the device fails to work and retests you time after time then locks you out. Plus everyone's degree of alcohol use and history is so different. So many DUIs come from people that don't drink much at all, still wrong yes, but every DUI interlock system treats you like some hardcore alcoholic fiend. They should at least like say for a 1st offense make you have one but only to start the car and go off way less. I get tested a good 50 times during one work day and all I think is " yea this makes sense because even someone who drinks often of not would definitely be tempted to open a drink while working doing mail.

For people with modern interlock devices on their cars here are some important things to know. The cameras are set to monitor motion if the system sees voltage spikes or drops indicating the car was started bypassing the breathalyzer. It will take a picture of the driver and cellular based data transmitter usually mounted under your dash will send all data immediately to the server along with GPS information. Do not try to bypass as this will just get you usually fined and possibly put in jail. Another thing to be aware of. If your state requires you to not drink at all and they specify that you cannot enter any business that's sole purpose is to sale or serve alchohol. Your interlock does report your location to a server based log with your picture everytime you start the car, turn the car off, and do rolling test in the car. Another words if you pull up to a bar and shut your car off it will record you are at that location with your picture. It will do it again when you turn the car back on. Meaning they can claim proof of your probation violation. You need to be mindful of going places such as strip malls where you might be actually just getting food from the store that is next to a liquor store and park far away from the liquor store to avoid potential problems with your probation officer. I am in Tennessee and I have to worry about that as a first offender for the year I have this on my car. It is a complete nuisance but they are able to see where I am everytime I have to blow into the device and I have to make sure I am not close to an illegal for me establishment. Also, there are a number of items that will cause a false positive. Certain mouthwashes, breads, anything with yeast some cough medication etc. You can find list online of the most common items that will cause a false positive. If you fail a test here in Tennessee it is a $70 fine and a possible violation of probation. So don't toy with it and just drink and test yourself for fun or anything. Dont let friends play with it either. When I first started my probation I did alot research and bought my own personal high end breathalyzer to test myself after brushing my teeth in the morning and found that my cologne gives a false positive too. Even if it is under the passing .02 BrAC this could trigger your probation officer to visit you unannounced later to see if you are drinking at home and search your home randomly. I am only 2 months in on my 12 month probation and I drive alot for work. I have stopped dating due to this thing as it is embarrassing. I rarely go out with friends and if I do we take their car. All my family and coworkers know about it because I have to use my car for work alot and attend meetings all over town. I am on the phone alot for business calls and have to mute my phone while driving to do the rolling test and then apologize to the person on the other end for the interruption. I blow into this unit at least 30 plus times a day. Luckily it has not malfunctioned yet and hope it doesn't. I think it is complete over reach by the government I am in my late 40s and never been in trouble in my life, very successful and got a dui from having a couple of drinks at dinner with friends and wasn't even drunk. Pulled over for speeding but wasn't speeding and wasn't cited for speeding. Fought it in court for 2 years cost me $17,000 to date. Have to report monthly to probation, drug test randomly and they are not testing for alcohol, just all other drugs which I don't do but have to pay for the test. I will never have another drink if I have to drive not even one beer after this load of bs. My car insurance went up $170 more a month and it never comes off my record. I own 5 cars and can only drive one of them till this is over and had to remove myself from the insurance on all the others some are company cars (I own a business) which I will not be able to drive for over 10 years due to this being on my record. Company insurance will not allow me to put any driver on the policy if they have had a dui in the last 10 years. Not even myself. No exceptions. In Tennessee this never comes off your record. By the time I can drive my other cars with reasonable insurance rates I will be almost 60. Anyway, more people crashing and killing from texting and driving than anything else and that's no big deal. Every time I look around while at a traffic light that's all I see is texting. Going down the road see it all the time. I don't do that either. My driving record was spotless. My criminal record was too. But now I am treated like a horrible person in society. I hate big government and they want to put as many people as they can into this situation so they can make big money off them and the insurance companies are all for it too. All about taking your green and keeping you in the system as long as they can so they can keep taking it. I know there are people out there that are out of control with drinking and driving but I think the punishment should be proportional to the individual case not one size fits all. I will be 3 years since actually having been stopped and arrested for DUI by the time this is over. Eight times appeared at court over the first 12 months before the officer showed up to testify. Then fought it another year. Then after a couple of appeals gave up and just pleaded. Saw a guy in the same situation with only a BAC of .02 still charged with DUI. Oh, If the police notice the GPS antenna in your window and the camera in your window that takes your picture (both are very easy to see) they have the right to stop you and search you at will because they know you are on probation and have no rights. I have concealed mine with car wrap vinyl on the windshield and put dark tint on my windows to hopefully not be bothered for the duration of this thing being in my car. It also makes it harder for others to see a get all judgmental about you. Hope this info helps someone. Be safe and can't wait till we see what will be the next big way the government will rule your personal life. Coming soon will be your smart phone tales on you for texting and driving! Then the same consequences as a DUI except you will lose all texting rights for a year and have to report to your probation officer for your drug test and let them take all your rights and bust into your home and search whenever they like. Maybe a data sensor in your car that takes random pictures of you while driving if it suspects you are texting. How's that sound? Sorry I am a little bitter.

Might sound crazy but I beat the interlock system . I took a drink of Pepsi then breathed into the unit . Car started right up. The unit never re-tested me as I was driving . People always told the bartender " There is a car running out there " I even got pulled over for speeding. The cop asked "have you been drinking ? " My answer was how can I with this in my car ? Of course I had been drinking ...

To answer the question honestly, now that it's only a month until I get to get this thing removed, all one has to do is put a jumper from the battery to a momentary switch somewhere like in the glovebox, then run the intermittent wire to your solenoid trigger. This completely bypasses the interlock and starts one's car without messing with the interlock's wiring which they DO occasionally inspect. I did it because my interlock kept malfunctioning and not recognizing my breath as breath. Granted I had to keep blowing every 3 minutes as I drove down the road to not miss a test, but at least I wasn't stranded and missed work. I never HAVE blown alcohol into the thing, it's just a POS that doesn't work and strands me in the damnedest places. Usually places where one can't simply just leave their car sitting like at the gas station in the ghetto. That said, I'm in Oregon where the horn doesn't honk and headlights don't flash when one does this. Other states have stricter laws. Eventually the machine malfunctioned so much that I just bought another car and have the Towncar sitting dead for the last 4 months. I've had the unit replaced multiple times and they all malfunction. Just get another car, pay your monthly ransom to the IID company, DON'T DRINK AND DRIVE, and nobody will say anything. These aren't really to save lives, they're to punish you for past offences and they're made to screw with you so you don't do it again.

My system is supposed to come out in two days. My appointment is the day after my monitoring stops. I live an hour from town my key broke off in my ignition I can't start car unless I can bypass it somehow. I can not afford to pay to have my car towed to garage to have device removed to then start my car. It is absolutely insane. I am completely stuck. And mine was not because of drinking. Long story. I complied and I am completely stuck.

I moved to another State from where my dui occurred. First off all the dui was from 1994. I moved away, but when i did come home, i had to have it installed to drive legally. Was put on in 2016. Anyway, because i was only twice allowed to have the machine calibrated in my new state, I was expected to make a five day roundtrip back for a five minute calibration. The machine timed out. So I either have to remove the unit, or go under financially. Im gonna try and remove it.

Moneylightning, the only wire they cut is the one that triggers your starter solenoid. They put a lead from the machine to the solonoid and another to the ignition switch. When it lets you start the car it makes a connection between the two wires. The rest of the wires only tap into other wires and can be removed easily. On mine they just used these little clamps that tapped into the wires and allowed a male blade-connector to tap into the circut to monitor electrical currents. Just reconnect like-colored wires under your dash to eachother after you remove it. The company that removed mine didn't even soldier the wires together, they used a crimp on butt-connector. That said, I signed a contract saying I'd pay $280.00 if I did that so I just bought another cheap car and let the one with the POS malfunctioning devise sit. It sat so long the fuel went bad and gummed up the fuel pressure regulator so I had to replace that to get the Townie back on the road. These things are a scam and dangerous to use while driving, and that's if it even lets your car work to drive it in the first place. Glad this is finally out of my car and being as I didn't touch any of their wires, just ran a jumper to my solenoid trigger connected to a momentary switch in the glovebox with the other wire running to the battery, they never figured out how I was bypassing it when it failed to work properly and I just HAD to use my car. Their technicians only check the wiring around the work they do, they don't check every wire in your car.

You can put the device in battery save mode but that doesn't always work so i bought one of these: Portable Car Jump Starter https://amzn.to/36evQQ1 along with this https://amzn.to/2YudhEK I found that it is not my battery that is an issue it seems to be some type of wacked communication between the starter/battery/ignition but using this battery starter works every time so far.

Yes, by opening the device and put in a blocker chip, bypasses every thing. Let's the device know its time to take the breathe test while not even taking it

Okay, maybe it's just me but I see a bunch of answers on here that just seem so simple to people (Obviously people that have never had to use one before or been on a joyride with someone that has). First and foremost, oh yes, I deserved mine ten-fold but the saddest part is, not when I deserved it the most.... I was pasted out, waiting on my fiance to pick me up because I knew I didn't need to get behind the wheel. MOST IMPORTANTLY, THIS IS TO KEEP EVERYONE ON THE ROADS SAFE???? WHAT A F****** joke. Shifting gear, signaling, oh and not to mention PAYING ATTENTION TO THE ROAD while humming and blowing into something that tells you to him louder or blow harder (try not to laugh when you get that one cause it may cost you a violation). To top it off, you wait expectantly to see "Drive Safe" hahaha what a friggen joke. Lastly, with this little bug going around, you know covid-19, I cannot even use hand sanitizer without violating. Has happened twice now. And you know the response I get, "well just wash your hands instead"... Geez, why in the world didn't I think of that, I'll just be sure to carry a portable hand washing station with me everywhere i go! Now tell me, where is the safety at in this interlock?

I got my first DUI last year and had the PITA BAIID installed in March. Tomorrow my permit expires and I can get that god-forsaken thing removed from my truck. I had a spotless driving record for 20 years and simply was in the wrong place at the wrong time, did not use my turn signal and BAM! (oh, and I was over the limit...). Point is, I have learned my lesson and am scared s--tless to ever get another DUI. Is this overkill for some to have a BAIID for 6 months? Maybe, but I think it is a great deterrent for people that need a kick in the ass. I hate this thing, but I'll be damned if I ever get another DUI. Obviously, it is not a great deterrent for a lot of people because I know guys on their 3rd DUI that will likely never see a license again....

Dont drink before you drive. I cant believe all the crap I am reading here. The devices work. If you drank last night, your machine may register over the limit as early as 7am. Get yourself a 35 dollar breathalizer so you dont drive over!!!!

Anyone else think (as I do) that the nuisance factor has been deliberately programmed into these devices? Blow harder, blow softer, blow longer, etc? It’s as if they’re saying to us, “Sure, OK, we’ll let you drive again, but we’re going to make sure it’s a year of hell.”

Meanwhile, they’re just waiting for that day when you’re on the freeway, gridlocked in bumper-to- bumper traffic so that pulling off the road is an impossibility, and of course the interlock starts beeping at you demanding a retest, and OF COURSE it picks this moment to be extra-finicky. Meanwhile, you’re trying every possible permutation of blows and hums in your desperate attempt to avoid the frustration and embarrassment of the flashing lights and that damned siren and another lockout - and you become so distracted that you rear-end the car in front of you. Result? More fines, more points, and higher insurance premiums - and the rats are laughing all the way to the bank.

I quit drinking for good before the end of my driving suspension, for a variety of compelling reasons. In the end, one day I just woke up and decided I no longer wanted to drink alcohol. Period. So the interlock ended up being basically a formality for me, but I said hey, it’s the law and at least I will be driving again. I just got the device installed Friday, and I’ve already experienced so much frustration with it working erratically - most of which my wife was witness to - that now, she is terrified of driving our car for a year because she doesn’t want to have to struggle with the device and perhaps have an accident as a result. My wife is teetotal. Where, I ask, is the justice or fairness in that? If you’re going to make these things and force people to have them installed, for G*d’s sake at least make them user- friendly so that you are not punishing the people who didn’t get nailed with the DUI!
