Any suggestions for a first-time car buyer with $1500-$2500?

I don't anything about cars and I'm looking for something that is reliable and easy to maintain for a few years. I have a modest budget and this is my first time buying a car. I don't need anything fancy. Any suggested models? years? make?

Ford escort zx2 - Sporty, easy on gas, and low maintenance. Right in your price range.
