can you put 1999 malibu motor and transmission in a 2006 impala

So it is possible to put a 1999 Malibu engine and transmission into a 2006 Impala. The reason I ask this is because I already have both vehicles and the engine and transmission are both dead in the 2006 Impala but in the 1999 Malibu the engine and transmission are good but the problem with the 1999 Malibu is that the back axel is snapped in have and is not repairable but everything else still working.

If you install an old engine in a newer car you will probably never pass smog inspection.

The rear axle in the 99 should be easy to replace and it won't cost much if you find a used one.
