Not "breaking down" per se....Multiple Recalls... then nickel and diming to death.... If anyone else says different, I have an HHR I will sell you...

If you do not use the correct gasoline and fluid in this car it will break down. Such as on the SS and LT 2.4L needs to run Premium fuel and Synthetic Oil. Both of these models have up to 5 computers in them. Low voltage kills them! So bad battery/Alternator or both can kill these electronics. The top motor mount is crap should be replaced with a polyurethane mount. The lower mounts its what ever you prefer. If the upper torsion mount goes bad it will cause transmission problems. Transmission fluid should be changed ever 50-60K. If these things are kept up you shouldn't have an issue with the car. The upper poly mount can be found at https://www.turbotechracing.com/productcart/pc/viewCategories.asp?idCategory=6249 This upper mount will not go bad like the stock one does!

Forgot to include the sway bar bushings in the front they will deteriorate with Salt on roads. I recommend replacing those with Poly bushings as well.

Not the most reliable car. Lot of posts here about serious engine problems.
