Something is wrong, re-check the work.

There should be an adjusting set screw locked down with a nut on top of the gear box. This gets adjusted to take out play in the gear box. If this is adjusted too tight, turned in too far, would cause erratic steering. It does not take much adjustment for this to happen. Try backing it off 1 turn.
