I have a 1987 Dodge Ramcharger, 360 engine. The fuel gauge does not work properly, but when the tank is half-full, the engine stops as if it is out of fuel. Fill up and OK. Thoughts?

1987 Dodge Ramcharger, 360 engine.  Fuel gauge does not work properly.  
When tank is half full, the engine stops as if the tank is empty.  Fill up and the
engine runs OK.  Any thoughts?

It’s either the sending unit in tank. Or there’s an inventor on back of gauge cluster that changes 12v to 6v that’s intermittent. At least that was my problem
