Oil pressure light

Asked by DEAP Aug 26, 2017 at 02:07 PM about the Dodge RAM 1500

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2011 ram with a 5.7. The oil light
came on at highway speeds or when you
kick it down to pass someone but driving
around town no problems. Oil was
changed a few days ago. No gauge on this
truck just a light. Don't get it any thoughts?

Was the correct weight oil put in? Was the correct amount put in? Was the sensor unplugged to do any part of the oil change? Check engine light on? Test oil pressure sensor? Do you have an oil leak?

The oil that was used is 5w-20. Oil level is correct. Nothing was unplugged and no check engine light on. No leaks. I will get the oil pressure sensor checked. Thanks. Just hoping for the easy fix. Hope don't have to take this engine apart. Thanks

I would also suspect wiring to this sensor if sensor is good. See if wiring is touching hot engine parts and vibrating insulation away. The only other thing I can think of is a compression issue since it comes on at higher speeds? Check sensor and wire first

If the problem only started after the oil change, verify there is enough oil, if not, check for leaks, starting with the oil filter. If oil level is ok and correct oil was put in. Passiblle cause could be a plugged pickup screen. Before pulling an oil pan down you want to verify your losing volume. Run the engine to operating temperature, shut engine off and remove oil pressure switch. Install pressure gauge, run engine at 2000 RPMs, for at least 2 minutes. If pressure starts to drop low, you could have a faulty oil pump or plugged pickup Screen. If pressure remains good, change the oil pressure switch.
