Question type: Maintenance & Repair

2009 dodge ram 1500 4x4,5.7 hemi.125,000 miles. Recently loss of oil pressure at idle,in
gear, stopped. Drops down to 5 psi. At 70 mph, gauge reads 40-45 psi. Changed oil
pressure sensor with oem. Fixed for about a month. Now back to same issue. Control
module threw a code of oil pressure  out of range/cam phasers. Im old school
mechanical. Not sure what to do here. First thought was oil pump and screen but have to
drop the front end and raise  motor to do it. Not knowing  for sure if thats the fix, its labor
intensive. Any one that can help would be greatly appreciated.

Rpm,s of oil pump not matching engine speed.Check drive of oil pump.OIL pumps have known to hydro glide while in service. With the water mixing oil will slide with 0 pressure, with loose tolerance of lower engine mass rotation slop is present.Replace Pcv valve change oil and use a mechanical gauge for accuracy.

Did you ever find out what it was that caused the problem? I have to ask because i just Hit 126000 miles on my dodge ram 1500 and its doing the same thing. Just had a oil change last month, no noises or anything and the oil is within range.

Hey,sorry for the delay. My engine is a MDS type. Hate it!!!! Anyways, the oil pressure issue for me was caused by the mds system. It shuts off 2 cylinders,Keeps them from firing when your cruising along down the highway. What it did was, cause one of the roller tipped lifters to go bad on the roller end and ruin the top end of the engine. I am like you,old school. Had i known what was happening, i would have torn it apart at that moment and redone the upper end of the motor. I kept doing small cheap fixes in hopes of it being fixed while driving it at the same time just because i didnt have the money to take it somewhere. My best advice to you is to stop driving it and take it to dodge for them to check. mine showed a constant misfire on #4 cylinder. Engines for an 09 are specific, did lots of research on this along with a couple of mechanics that I've befriended through this ordeal. You cant put a 10 engine in,or so I'm told. Feel free to call me at 210-701-2440. I would hate to see you pay the price I did.

Mine isn’t dropping to 5 psi. Mine does go as low as 14psi at an idle with an aftermarket cam and custom tune. Mine is not mds but I was told that the drastic change in the oil pressure is so that the cam phaser and the mds can work properly. A good rule of thumb is 10psi to every 1000 rpms on these engines. So 5psi sounds kinda creepy.
