Do you know an expert on 1958 Impalas?

Asked by Garry Feb 07, 2012 at 09:59 PM about the Chevrolet Impala

Question type: General

Trying to buy a 58 impala and want to know where I can trace VIN #.  Every source either wants money, or they want a 17 digit vin#   These classics don't have 17 digit vin #s.   Help me!

open the the hood and look at the motor . do the valve covers look like an upside down W ? thats a 348 .. otherwise it'l have a small block (283 or 267) ( yawn ) The W motor 348 later became the famous 409 and they look identical ... get the idea ?

Oldride.com you can get a lot of info on your Chevy there thats were I got the info I needed for my 59 sport coupe. Go all the way to the bottom of the home page click on the Libary tag.

Thank you both for your help. I know about the 348 for sure. I am a corvette guy and I am quite familiar w/ "big-block" corvettes, but I'm trying to find out more about the GM passenger cars, which I don't think have "matching numbers" as we know them, but "period correct" engines, etc. so I will try Oldride.com and see what I can find out. THANKS AGAIN...looking forward to getting more information and knowledge on these cars./GW/

just get the numbers off the engine & see if they match the VIN.

In 1958 Chevrolet VIN number do not match the motor number in no way you can look at motor number for instant (A 3 58) (F 23 58) (K 9 58 ) find these number on the motor, heads, and intake they all should match for a match number motor

Peter, why on earth would a '58 Chevy have a "267" motor ??? In the 1958 passenger cars only the 348, 283, and the 235 sixes were availible with standard three speed, four speed, PowerGlide or TurboGlide transmissions
