gas my 2006 chevy cobalt ls drinks alot of gas will it hurt to put gas treatment in it or a higher octane of gas

In addition to what Jim suggested, check the air pressure in the tires. Under inflated tires are a big killer of fuel mileage. Also I always recommend Techron fuel additive. It is available at O'Reillys, Autozone and similar places.
