Suspension bushing problem?

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have 17000 miles on my car and a knocking sound is occuring when i hit a large bump in the road coming from the front suspension. I have a friend who had the same problem and said the bushing wore out between the frame and the suspension.

Is this common?

The noise you're hearing is the front lower control arm rear pancake bushing...which is VERY common amongst the chevy cobalts. That should be a warranty item.

Most likely front control arm bushings and control arm. Possibly even the stabalizer bar. These three all went bad on my 2007 chevy cobalt. Seems to be a VERY common problem. I called the corporate center because its obviously a part quality issue and they said there will not be a recall because its not a safety issue. However because they understand its a common problem with the Cobalt, they offered 10% off a 500 dollar repair bill. Screw that. Be a GOOD American and buy domestic = Screwed!!! I will never go with Chevy again. I am gonna try to trade this car in for a Camry.

Brian, can you tell me which model Cobalt this was? The FE5 suspension on SS is very stout.

Well, I seem to have the same issue. I actually called the main chevy number at 18002221020 and complained about the bushings. Appearently they have filed the complaint, maybe if enough people file a complaint there will actually be a recall.

I had the same issue on my 2007 Chevy Cobalt. I replace pretty much the whole front end. Control arms, struts, tie rod ends, intermediate shaft, and sway bars. It got rid of alot of clunking but not all. So I replaced the engine motor mount and both transmission mounts. It got rid of the clunking. All the mounts were bad. The aft transmission mound was actually cracked.

The motor mount has dampening fluid in it and if it is leaking it is bad.
