Why does my car hum wherter on or off

The 'hum' MAY be your cooling fan, it is normal for it to run for a minute or two after shutting off your car. Other than that can you hum a few bars so I can get an idea? Sorry 'bout that I couldn't resist. Seriously, can you describe the hum a little better? More like a buzz maybe? and from where on the car? Front? Rear?
