If you have small hands it can be done with the dash in place, but I understand it is not fun. There is a how to on www.mercurymarauder.com I will see if I can find the write up later for you.

http://www.mercurymarauder.net/forums/showthread.php?t=66574 The Mercury Marquis and the Marauder are mostly the same car. You would need to ignore the part about the floor shifter as your car has column shift. Be sure to use only a genuine Ford blend door actuator because there have been some early failure of the aftermarket "Dorman" units. Aslo make sure that the problem is the blend door and not the ETAC unit (electronic temp air control). Good luck, it won't be a fun job.
