How reliable is an RX-8? I'd like to change from my 2000 Prelude which is A1 in reliability, should I?

They will require you to check your oil since they burn oil, and they eat gas like no tomorrow. The rotary engine IMO is not meant for street cars. It's a horrible little gas guzzler that requires more maintenance that many shops won't even try. Look up what an Apex seal is and see what it takes to replace it. However, it's great for a track car where lightweight is a goal

I have had my RX8 since 2005, it failed me once when I was camping (I started and stopped the engine without warming it up) (known problem)). I had an RX7 for ten years and loved it hence the RX8. It does drink gas, but performance more than makes up for it IMHO. If you keep the EEC flashed regularly (Mazda is constantly making improvement for performance), the car will run without issue. I have 77,000 on the odometer and it still runs like it just came off the showroom floor. Bottom line, the RX8 is a performance bred car and has proved itself on the track, it will perform for you if you keep it tuned up to spec.

Hey thanks for all your responses... it sounds a bit like a hot, high maintenance chic... which could be ok i suppose... I have a feeling the performance will make up for it all, but I sure will miss the 4 wheel steering I guess you can't have it all huh :)
