Wash engine while it's warm and be careful not to spray directly on electrical components. Covering electrical components up is a good idea. A warm engine will dry out quicker than a cold engine. Not a good idea to wash a hot engine.

yep they are all right on all accounts. The old safaris were terrible with damp weather and you adding water directly to the mix just made it jump spark off every metal surface attached to the spark plug wires. If the van don't start after this i recommend changing all the spark plugs distributor cap and rotor and you should be right as rain. Also if you can find sleeves for the spark plug wires your van will perform better during the winter and damp days.
