why does my car die occasionally?

my car will drive run just fine all day and then occasionally i'll come to a stop
light or stop sign and it will die, so then I have to put it in park and shut the car
off and then the car will restart, but will die only in drive and reverse

It sounds like it may be due for a tune-up. They would clean the throttle body, check everything over to cause this problem.
