This happened to me on my Expedition and it ended up being a bad battery and a broken pcv hose. If there are no lights that come on the dash when it dies, check your pcv hose and vacuum lines.

Could be caused by the throttle body clogged with carbon, a defect in the mass air flow sensor, or an O2 sensor. Might be the idle speed controller, a clogged EGR valve, or a vacuum leak. If you have any warning lights take car to an auto shop and have codes read, probably free, so you'll know what areas your problems are in. Then have a mechanic check it out.
