The timing chain slipped on my 98 cavalier. Can I replace it, and if so, how much will it cost me?

My dad is saying that this is the end of the car, and I'm just going to have to junk this
one and get a new one. Is he right or can I fix my car?

It depends on how much damage was done to the valvetrain. If the timing is just off with no collisions between valves and pistons then simply replacing the timing belt and gears and re-aligning the timing marks will solve your problem. If the valves collided with the pistons there could be varying degrees of damage, from bent valve stems and/or pushrods to holes in pistons, smashed valves, and/or broken camshaft(s) or more. I would have the engine taken apart and inspected before deciding whether or not to junk the car.
depends on the motor in the cavalier if u have the 2.2 then the motor should b fine and replacing the timing chain is an excellent idea but if u have the 2.4 quad 4 motor then u more than likely sent the valves thru the pistons b/c it is an intrusive motor
