Operating car with a key

Asked by jankauf1 Jul 19, 2008 at 10:05 AM about the 2008 Toyota Prius

Question type: General

In former cars, I would make extra copies of the key and keep them in case I locked myself out of my car.  With the smartlock system, I'm a little confused.  I know I can make extra keys -- but can they only be used to unlock the door?  I don't see a place to use the key to start the car (only the smartkey).  How much do the extra "smartkeys" cost.  I sorta hate the idea of giving a valet parking attendent the smartkey.  You can see I'm confused about this whole system......

their is no coping the smart key,the dealer may be able to get you another, then you may want to rethink valet parking.

with the smart key you cannot just cut a key, that key in the keypod is only to unlock the door to the car. You can order a key pod for your model car online for a good price and then take it and the car to a good locksmith and he can program it to fit your car at a good price, lot cheaper than a dealer! Still about $100 to $150 when finished!!!
