I have done that. My husband checked it and it was down about one quart. He added water, which I understand is not a good deal. What now?

A quart of water isn't going to be a big problem. What needs to be done is find out why it was down. The radiator is a closed system, so the coolant went somewhere. The next step is to have a pressure test done.

No. Just keep an eye on the temperature gage. And NEVER EVER open the radiator cap where the engine is hot!
