1984 Pontiac Firebird shifting problems?

When stepping on the gas from a stop the whole car jerks and sorta shoots me back into my seat when it shifts from first to
second but not shifting to any other gear but if I let off the gas before it shifts to second it doesn't jerk at all. what could the
problem be and what could potentially fix this???
