B-A-A-A-D-D Exhaust fumes in my car!

Well guys, my '72 convertible is drivable now. With the top up, maybe all the time, it sucks in exhaust fumes in like mad! I expect the heater boxes are the main culprit. As I live in the SouthWest with mild Winters, and the "heater" is of little value anyway, I am considering blocking off the heater channels. Anyone ever done that? Is there a kit someone makes for this job? Any suggestions are always welcome. Thanks guys!

My" baja bug" had the stock heater tubes that were not hooked up because it had aftermarket exhaust. So I removed the tubes and blocked the channels with plastic caps I got from my local hardware store.
