1989 cheroke grand lorado will not shift out of 2nd

bought it out of a feild last year and have been trying to get it running dependably. Got it started and finally moving but now it will not shift out of 2nd. I have heard that there is a filter on the transmission that gets clogged. could someone please tell me where it is?
