Dear Drago_jes-- The 1970 Dodge Challenger came with a choice of two engines. The 330 cubic inch engine produced 335 hp. The optional 440 c.i. produced 375 hp. Dodge sold 76,935 of these cars in 1970. I wish I had one now. Good luck from Bovan.

There were several engines in the 1970 Dodge Challenger, with hp numbers in parentheses: 225 Slant 6 (145), 318 2bbl (230), 340 4bbl (275) & Six Pack (290), 383 4bbl (335), 440 4bbl (375) & Six Pack (385), and finally 426 Hemi (425). Among the factory/stock engines, I personally believe that only 3 of those listed were reported accurately as to horsepower, but another one came close.

I suppose I should have followed up instead of being so mysterious. Here goes: The three I believe that were reported accurately: 340 4bbl (275) and 340 Six Pack (290) and the 440 Six Pack (385.) The last would assume a high degree of tuning, however, as the factory net rating was 330 bhp at 4800 rpm. Coming close: The 426 Hemi (425) From what I gather, the stock street engine could make up to the 400 hp range with everything installed. Actual horsepower was known to vary with this temperamental engine. A few extra notes: The net figures that I have seen for the high-compression 440 4bbl, aka 440 Magnum, were 305 bhp @ 4700 rpm and 405 ft-lbs at 3200 rpm. This was still one of the finest street engines ever and was fabulous in the Challenger! The 383 4bbl, aka 383 Magnum, was an improvement over the standard 4bbl engine, but not by much. I don't know of any figures immediately but I suspect that this engine only developed about 260 real horsepower. This powerplant was not highly regarded by some Mopar racers, as I recall. I really liked it, however. The 318 was a fine, economical engine, but it wasn't going to win any races. Actual power would be around 170 or less. The slant 6 was a very durable six cylinder engine, but at 100-110 real horsepower it wouldn't be considered speedy by any stretch!
