Anyone knows why the wipers start working on the auto mode without rain in the night of a Merc c180 2004 model?

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My car has auto wipers and auto head lamps.  I thinhk there is a sensor that picks light and rain conditions on the windscreen.  Each time I drive in the night the wipers start going every now and then when it is on auto mode without rain.  I have a Peugeot with same functions and it is dead accurate.  Can anyone please help.

well the rain sensors work by detecting any obstruction on the glass directly above the sensor. the easyest explanation for the malfunction would be a dirty wind shield :D but youve probably figured that out yourself. the only other (all be it improbable) explanation as far as i can think of is that your sensor is picking up some disturbance in the night time (the lack of light somehow bothers it) or that its just oversensitive. this i find highly improbable because it would be a series wide thing, merc would have fixed it by now. my proposition is go to your dealer and explain your problem, if youve got premium warranty the should fix it free of charge. hope it helps, cheers Z.
