model year advice

My girlfriend says she wants to find a cabrio because here pickup gets terrible mpg
and is not always practical.
Further she says that she like the Gen 1 version's looks.
Can anyone advise on the pros and cons of the different engines, etc.
Known common issues.

no cons on a vw,they great vehicles,as long as maintance is kept up.

so they are called rabbit before 1983? and then they are golf? no worries on that. How about trans 4 spd, 5 spd? the dreaded auto?

No problems, just DONT by an MK1or MK2 (1st and 2nd gen) automatic stay with a standard Volkswagen didn't learn how to build a reliable automatic trans until 1997
