Heater stuck on the winshield defrost mode

I have a 1997 Subaru Impreza with the heater stuck in the windshield defroster
mode.  Does anyone know what could be the problem?

Pushbutton rotary selector knob? Former: take apart to clean out dried liquid sugars from soda, coffee, milk, juices, etc. Latter: remove console panel and hook cable end back onto selector switch. Rarely will you have to purchase a replacement switch/cable assy.
