How do I know if my mountaineer is 4×4 or not
Look underneath the car, there will be a front differential as well as a transfer case. If it's 4wd there will be CV shafts on the front as well. If this is confusing, then look inside the cab for a switch between 2HI 4HI and 4LO. In newer cars it is a switch, but in older ones, like my ram pickup, it is a lever in the cab with positions and gears on it. In your case, I looked up a picture of a 4wd switch for mountaineers. It will look something like the pictures I uploaded. I do not know which generation mountaineer you have so I included both.
Either the one above, or this one. This will be the easiest, leas dirty way to find out if your car is 4wd.
2006 only offered 2 Wheel Drive and All Wheel Drive (AWD). No buttons or other controls. The easiest way to check, besides looking under the car for the front wheel drivers, is to look at the tailgate for the AWD emblem on the right side just below the window. If there is no emblem and its the original running gear, it is two wheel drive. The AWD is full time and can't be switched off.
So it is awd all the time and then you can switch into 4 wheel drive via the dash controls?
How do i get my mountaineer out of four wheel drive ? It's automatic and when I start the car it goes into 4x4 by it self and there are no controls?
