How can you fix a trunk latch that will not close without the key in the keylock!

Asked by thunder Jan 04, 2007 at 09:53 PM about the 1988 Ford Thunderbird

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

When we take the key out of the trunk, the trunk latch will not secure - it always releases every time. We did try to lube the latch mechism, too. Any suggestions.

Hi Thunder. Replacing the latch isn't usually a huge job and if you are handy you can probably handle it. The problem may be the truck key. If you can live with a separate key for the truck that's easy and it may be cheaper if you can find a latch at your local junk yard. But if you'd like to use your regular keys with the trunk lid as well you'll need to special order the latch from your dealer. Your local locksmith may be able to re-key the lock however if your dealer (for some inexplicable reason) has your T-Bird trunk latch in stock, or if you can find a latch at the local junkyard, but you should verify that prior to ordering/buying your new latch
