I have a 1984 Elan w/302. The over flow for the coolant stays at the full hot mark. even if it is cold. The radiator when opened shows low coolant. It does not overheat. What's going on.

Bad radiator cap or bad return hose from radiator to overflow. If both are old I would replace. This should make it work properly.

I would also do a vacuum test on cooling system. Any small leak could also cause this to happen. It is easier for system to pull air in thru a leak than pull fluid back from over flow. Hope this helps

If that doesn't help check your thermostat . If it not fully opening properly it could cause the same issue. Sorry I did not think of this the other day. Good luck
