Can I replace fuel filter in 1987 Chevy S10 pickup myself?
My husband has limited experience working on older cars. Wondering how
easy/difficult it is to replace fuel filter. Would love to save $400+ we're quoted
to replace at garage.
It is fuel injected V6
the thing with old fuel filters is that they are rusted and the connections won't come apart easily ,once things start stripping and breaking you start replacing the rest of the fuel lines . Let me guess it;'s not running right and you think it's the fuel filter .usually it's not
That price sounds like a fuel pump not a filter, the filter is super easy to change, at the outside it will only take 20 minutes to change it, look at you tube for the video on how to do it.
Oops, I goofed. I meant to say a fuel pump. Battery is newer & engine will crank but not turn over. Even if we crank long enough to flood engine, it doesn't flood & there is no smell of gas that you usually get when you flood the engine.
You can do it yourself but you have to be very careful as you will be spilling some fuel and the vapors are very flammable, the biggest problem is getting the fuel out of the tank and storing it safely while you drop the fuel tank to get to the pump assembly. And don't forget to replace the filter and fuel pump relay at the same time. Due to the age of the vehicle I would recommend that you replace the entire assembly and not just the pump and strainer to prevent problems with the assembly down the road. There should also be a video on you tube on fuel pump replacement.
87 should be TBI so the pump is in the tank.
