JUST BOUGHT OLD 78. IT HAS 454 , AUTO, AND SPECIAL TRAILER PACKAGE W/3.40 REAR END. LOOKS AND FEELS STRONG BUT, NOT SURE HOW HEAVY A TRAILER OR BOAT IT CAN TOW?

Trailer capacity will be dependent upon the hitch you have, whether Class III, IV, etc. I would say you can probably tow 6,000-7,000+ lbs. with the proper hitch.

I have your exact year and model and it can tow up to 12,500lbs. If you look up 1978 chev manuals online they will give you the spec chart on their towing packages.
