Bump start 65 Chevy backwards

Asked by BuilderBob55 Aug 11, 2020 at 08:20 PM about the 1965 Chevrolet Bel Air

Question type: General

I swear this happened, but having a hard time proving it. I was a senior in high
school back in ‘73, and owned a 65 biscayne with straight six, three on the
tree.  Was sitting in an inclined driveway, and thought I’d bump start the car,
why I don’t know, but I digress. Rolling backwards, I mistakenly had
transmission in 2nd, not reverse, popped the clutch, and engine started, but
running backwards. I’d put it in reverse, it went forward, first, it went backward.
Now the topper. I shut the car off, and , I swear to god on the eyes of my
children, the car started in reverse!  The only way I corrected it, was to
jumpstart it in the correct gear. I need vindication, so please help me here Car
Gurus!

In the glory days of Hudson racing they cheated by installing a reverse rotation cam and they ran the engine backwards. The torque transfer helped them corner on the oval tracks.
