Overheated battery in my 2000Corvette.

Asked by GuruWQDN5 May 13, 2018 at 08:00 AM about the 2000 Chevrolet Corvette

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

After a trip yesterday I noticed smoke from the
hood, opened it and found the bartered extremely
hot. Also some oily stuff had dropped from the card
under the battery. What could be the reason?

It looks like your battery may have an internal short which produces heat and boil over of electrolyte or acid. Or you may also have a defective alternator charging at too high a voltage. Either way, it sounds like the battery could burst causing lots of injury and damage so I would carefully remove the battery and take it in have it tested at Autozone or your mechanics shop. I'm betting the battery will test out bad and replacing it will solve the problem. Just be careful.
