The basics for problems at higher rpms, check for a blockage of some kind, the first two things I think of is fuel and exhaust? Any applicable trouble codes? Do you think the tranny is ok?

Could be a clogged catalytic converter, and here's why: might be a failing fuel pump that's not creating the right pressure and causing multiple misfires. These misfires push raw gas into the exhaust and destroy the converters. as oilyspill advised, check for codes and this might give you better direction.
