No crank problem

Asked by coryjad May 25, 2017 at 09:41 PM about the 1993 Toyota Camry

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Went out for dinner in my girlfriends camry, came out after and it wouldn't even
turn over. Tried boosting it, and checking fuses but still nothing. Had it towed
to a shop, they suspected neutral safety switch so my dad and I ordered the
part to do it ourselves (He's a mechanic, I'm an enthusiast). Replaced it and
still nothing changed. We then tested the starter by jumping it to the battery
with a push button getting the engine to roll over while the key is in the ON
position but it still wouldn't start. Wasn't getting spark when we pulled a plug
either. At a bit of a loss here because that should have fired her up correct?
Maybe there was a short in the process?    Any help is much appreciated,
thank you

Ok, how many miles on her? Have you noticed poor driving or stalling before hand? Did u check all fuses and relays?

when was the last time you had a timing belt done? Beside the ignition system, a jumped timing belt would also cause starting problem

another common problem is...The pickup coil inside the distributor can fail and cause a no-start condition. There have also been some failures of the radio noise suppressors inside the distributor which can short out. It is recommended to replace the whole distributor with a complete genuine Toyota distributor if any of its components fail.

Any mechanic that "suspects" a part is bad is no good , you can do that , if the batt. is good and terminals are clean and tight and it doesn't crank then it could be a starter relay or the starter itself , these thing should be tested before buying new
