i just bought a 2002 subaru impreza outback sport and when i bought it it had clean oil in it and it had slight hesitation during acceleration i have put about 1000 mile on it mosty secondary roads and it seems to have trouble most trouble between ideling and 3000rpm and once it reaches 4500 and starts poping and craking i cheaked the ouil after driving all day and it have a strong smell of gas an it is very thin conistancy it has very strog pressure from the tail pipe and it only has 150000 miles on the car i spend all my money on the car and do not have the money to spend on repairs i know a little about working on cars and hav to repair this myself where should i start with troble shooting my problem? thank you
Sorry to hear about your troubles. With 150K and being a Subaru and you saying the oil is thinning, I can guarantee you, you have a head gasket issue. But could be something else. A head gasket issue is in which is coolant is getting into the oil. Check the coolant level, is it low or getting lower? The seller probably hide the issue by changing the oil before sale. This is a common issue on the Subaru's especially at your mileage. It is a big job. The top end of the engine must be removed. At any professional shop your looking at a $1200-1600 repair. But have a professional shop diagnose the issue before suspecting the worse... Good luck
if you had water in the oil, it would look milky and have some foam to it. if you are smelling gas, i would suspect something else, could be running very rich if it was tuned or played with - or it could be something like an injector issue or even just a leaking injector seal. since there are only 4 cylinders and they are horizontally opposed, losing one may not make it run rough, but could rob a lot of power easily.
