Pontiac Sunfire Ignition

Asked by Monica Jan 20, 2016 at 04:26 PM about the 2002 Pontiac Sunfire

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

To turn on my car I have to turn the ignition switch
forward all the way and hold it. It will start but it's a
slow start. No clicking or anything, I just have to
have the key turned a certain way. Any ideas on
what it could be.

Having to turn the key all the way clockwise to the "start" position and holding it there until the car is running is normal. However, turning it a "certain way" is not. Have you tried a different key to see if the car does the same thing?

Normally I turn the key and the car starts, but now I have to turn even further back and hold it in a certain spot and it slowly starts to sound like it's going to turn on, if I move it then it stops. When it does start it sounds like it's trying really hard . I barely got it to start just now, I had to move the key forward and back until I found the right spot. I don't have another key so I can't try that.
