when trying to start it

My fathers car when you go to start it it wil spit and goon you give it some gas and it will go but runs rough and smoke out the pipe you have to keep giving it gas for about 5mins then after that it will set there and run good and theres no codescoming up

is the right octane fuel in it? have you done anything mechanicalwise to it in the last 6 months

Could be many things. If it has a high milage, try checking, and if needed, changing or cleaning out the air filter, fuel filter, MAF, etc. Also, when was the last time the plugs and wires were changed or any other parts in the ignition system. If the plugs were changed, were the proper heat range plugs put in?
