my son has a Pontiac grand am sport. it will not start at times. his fuel gauge maybe at half but when you try to start it it will jump over to full then end up at below empty.

We put gas in and it started. So he went to th gas station and put 5 dollars in.
The pump would not let any more in. He was able to take care of some things
which he said things were fine for a couple of hrs. Then he stopped at
another gas station to get a drink. Went to start the car. And it did the same
thing as stated above. Turns over but no start.
